gatlinburg, charleston, myrtle beach

FRIDAY 1 OCTOBER, 8.13PM

a vacation within a vacation is always nice.

sharon (regan's mum), rian (his twin brother), regan and i just got back from a mini road trip to a few places in tennessee and south carolina. each had it's own charm and alot of character - so it's hard to say which was 'better', but charleston appealed to me most. i think.

in gatlinburg, we met up with regan's grandparents (who are awesome, by the way), his uncles and aunt, and cousin kim (hello, kim!). in between the hillbilly golf, space needle and the ripleys aquarium, we all got to know each other a bit better and i spent the time learning more about my husband that i didn't know (all good stuff).

next place was charleston, where i arrived feeling very very car sick. after a tylenol and an hour or so, we were ready for our ghost tour of the town and some dinner. i don't think the boys (regan and rian) enjoyed charleston as much as sharon and i did, but i managed to do a little walk around the market on my own. the aquarium down there is amazing and the people there was really friendly.

our last stop was myrtle beach which was the first time i had seen the (brown) atlantic ocean in person. it reminds me of the gold coast (in australia) but wayyy longer, flatter and calmer. i love the beach though, so i got some good alone time down on the sand, and even attempted a sand castle or two. it was my first time in my swimsuit since january, which was a whole other scary story. more mini golf was played at really elaborate courses, while my really strange, hormonal behaviour acted up. managed to catch the last half hour of the presidential debate which was interesting to see also. it was a really nice last stop, lovely to wake up in the morning with that view.

we arrived back in north carolina this afternoon after a long drive, picked up the girls (the dogs, sadie and isabelle) and now we're all recovering and savouring these last days before heading west to san fran, and then back home next weekend to sydney.

time flies, huh?

i wish i could upload my photos as i write this down, but i'll save that for when we get back home and i can start the neverending online slideshow that we all know is going to happen anyway. haha. i have been making note of the differences of things in the states versus australia, and it's getting interesting.

i might check back in if we find a net cafe and some time in san francisco, but if not - see you back in sydney!

Talk about a whirlwind tour of the US, wow! I'll be interested to hear about some more of your observations (I'm a Yankee living in Sydney like Regan, go figure). When I travel home I always end up putting on a few pounds because the servings are HUGE! have fun!

hey! you're in my neck of the woods now--I live in Columbia, SC, about 2 hours from Charleston, and 3 from Myrtle Beach. I've been going to Myrtle since I was born, really. I'm glad to hear you had fun!!! Can't wait to see all your photos!

you'll definitely find an internet cafe somewhere in san francisco. do you have a laptop with you, that runs wireless? because i think a lot of places offer free wireless around too.

sounds like you're having fun! and i can't wait to see the slideshow. :D

It's always nice to know that you've been to lots of places and had lots of fun, but most of all that you shot lots of pictures of them.

ripley's in galtinburg is awesome. my family and i used to go every year. it sounds like you got to see a lot of the southern states...next time you visit you should try visiting around south alabama and louisiana, mainly for the culture aspect. skip mississippi though, who hasn't seen casinos in the middle of a field before? have fun!

Gatlinburg is interesting, isn't it? I live about an hour away and we don't go very often because it's too "touristy" but Ripley's is definitely the place to see up there. And I agree with you about Charleston... there aren't any friendlier people in the South (except maybe Savannah)!

Brown water? Are the oceans brown? Or am I just a dingbat and took that outta context? Man..to be you right now...

Glad to hear you're enjoying yourself! I have yet to see the Atlantic myself. :) I just went to SF this past weekend for a class photo assignment - to the Palace of Fine Arts... you should really check that out if you can - it's breathtaking your first time there. :) Take care!

I live in Charleston, and if you think Myrtle Beach was great you should try some of the others here in Charleston like Folly Beach for example.
