how bad are paint fumes?

they've been painting the hall way and our doors over the past few days, and of course i sit right next to our door where the fumes seep in, i even had to open the door while the painter painted the edges of it (about 45cms away from my head mind you)....

common sense says to stay away, but i work from this place 9 hours a day and i can't stand the smell anymore and am getting paranoid about the fumes killing my brain cells. am i being over cautious here, or should i be taking longer and more frequent breaks away from this place?

the first thing i smelt this morning when i got up was the paint, blahhhh. i do have the balcony door wide open (letting all the flies in) and the fan is on high, so at least air is circulated around the room but dammmn it stinks.

Hi Tracey!
I don't think it would kill your brain cells, but depending on what kind of paint they're using, of course, you could suffer poisoning (similar to carbon monoxide poisoning) and have some pretty bad headaches!! It would help if you wore a mask , and perhaps spent the night at your family's! (you know, so you wouldn't need to wake up and smell tha paint...)

Are you still alive? ;-)

They tend to put nontoxic stuff in paint these days, or so I've heard, so you'd probably be alright... long term exposure is probably worse. But yeah I know the smell is horrible, and I'm agreeing with Raquel about the mask or spending the night elsewhere! It's been 2 days now since you posted this, so I presume it's all back to normal now anyways. 8-)
