the importance of being early.
thursday night - nautropath appointment
feeling tired, so i figure 'take the monorail' since it would get me straight there in plenty of time. get to the monorail station with $4 for a token, no other change in my pocket (just a credit card). token is $4.50 and i have 15 minutes to get to my appointment. high tail it and make it to the strand arcase in 12 minutes, a tracey chinatown-city walk record (i'm slowww).
friday morning - seminar at luna park
leave the apartment with 30 minutes to get to luna park - should take me 15 minutes. go to start my dad's car - doesn't start. go to start it again - doesn't start. panic. confusion. try starting it again - okay. called my dad to ask him what i might need to do to get it to start, before he could answer, my mobile phone battery dies. plan b!
run out to the main street to flag down a taxi, luckily i spot one within 5 minutes. since i have less than $20, i ask 'how much would it be to luna park?' taxi driver says 'i don't know'. i reply 'do you take credit cards?' (as some taxi's do these days) 'no'. 'can i pay you once i get money out of the atm at luna park?' .. taxi driver says 'close the door now'. i'm kinda confused and ask 'sorry?'. taxi driver repeats 'close the door i'm going to other way. close it'. i apologise (for what?) and close the door and he rolls away. weird.
with 15 minutes left to get to luna park, i wonder up and down harris street trying to spot a cab in the traffic - none. i contemplate just going home and ringing for a cab, but i thought this would be quicker. i try reading the bus timetables and i try to decide whether to run to the train station but i know both would get me there late. a lovely taxi driver pulls up 5 minutes later (with me on the other side of the road) and agrees to get me there and i can pay him with money i'll get from the atm later. thankfully, he's understanding and friendly and gets me to luna park on time - so i give him whatever money i had in my purse and run off into the park happy!
my 'getting home' story isn't much better, but you get the idea - always leave enough time for things that suddenly 'come up' if you are going somewhere. car's that don't start, taxi drivers that tell you to go away, mobile phone's that don't charge, little or no change in your pocket. i'm such a 'get there early freak' but sometimes you can't plan everything!
