tuesday usa chatter
i just realised i never made a post on my usa/tv/food experience... during our first week there, i managed to sit down and get my first taste of it and being a tv-aholic, it was gooooood!
passions, if you read back you'll find that i'm a passions 'fan'. we're about 3 years behind, so imagine my confusion as the story had (finally) moved somewhere new, haha. whitney pregnant, alternate theresa pregnant again, eve with julian, alistair revealed, pilar's husband alive...
the ellen show i love ellen. the opening dancing is cute! i don't think it'll be shown in australia.. so i gobbled this show up while i was there
lost bound to be one of my favourite shows when it gets to australia (when?), i only got to see the first 3 or 4 episodes but it was goood. Regan didn't like the idea of a plane crashing though, haha. we still had 4 or 5 flights left to take at this stage! (eta: just saw that 'lost' will be on ch7 feb 2005!!!)
at the time, we also caught new episodes of oprah, joey, csi:new york, wife swap, survivor, the amazing race 5 finale, listen up, lax, joan of arcadia and a couple of kooky day time talk shows that hadn't made our shores yet. what's with all the court tv shows? judge joe brown, judge judy, judge mathis, judge hatchett..
while i'm at it.. what's with all the drug commericals? i was only 'solidly' watching tv for 2 days but i saw so many pharmaceutical advertisements... got a headache? you need this. got a stomachache? take two of these. allergies? impotency? metabolism problems? arthritic? pregnant? depressed? congested? maybe you don't need drugs, here's a anti drug ad for good measure. now back to the drive thru chemist or your drive through bank... american tv is a wonderfully colourful place ;) i haven't even noted all the fast food joints yet, haha!
99c nuggets at wendy's and that giant can of tomato sauce (i mean, ketchup) with the little tiny white cups to put it in. awesome. 'large' cup of ice tea at carl's jr = a bucket of tea that i'll never finish. classic. those really small burgers you stick in the microwave for 30 secs and they come out all yummy. (i can't believe i can't remember what they're called). pizza slices that are as big as my head. the lack of juice bars everywhere (or australia has a serious overflow of them). broccoli salad and red ranch sauce.
as you can see, i had a good time in the us. haha. being there for the first time is like being a kid in a candy store. going to walmart was a big deal!

hahah that's cool! I don't know what's up with all the judge shows.. they started springing up everywhere on all stations in the mid-90's.. I'm really surprised they've all still lasted. I don't know why people would be so interested in watching little court cases like that.
America is full of junk and fast food with orversized portions and everything. That's why there's such a problem with obesity here! *sigh* I don't know if you saw Jamba Juice when you were here in Cali but it's an AWESOME juice place. MMMMM... I want some even though it's cold here.
You must share more!

yeah, strangely we don't have a lot of juice bars, and i wish we did! however, there are at least 2 starbucks in every city as well as local coffee houses. as for juice bars.. jamba juice is so yum, and so is surf city with their cheap boba drinks. :)
if you were lucky to go to a COSTCO or SAM'S CLUB kind of warehouse shopping area with wholesale prices, you would have seen the food area that offers a 32 OUNCE SODA for like, less than a dollar, and a HUUUGE slice of pizza (equivalent of 2 regulars) for about $1.75, as well as hot dogs priced at $1.00/$1.50 and icee drinks. haha!:)
joey is an awesome show. and OMG PASSIONS? i haven't watched in FOREVER and am so behind on the storyline i have no way of catching up. i read that miguel is gone now, because he wants to pursue better acting careers? he's on desperate housewives <3 and i like him on that show much better. he is a manly man even though he is just playing a high school kid, not that sappy pathetic iloveyoucharity thing. is charity still around? i hate her. and thersa is pregnant again! my goodness! and whitney is pregnant! with who's baby? GROSS IS SHE WITH CHAD? isnt' he her brother? OMG!!!

A fun post, in spite of what Brian says.
Had to laugh at several of your observations. The GIANT iced tea makes you look so tiny. Great shot!

I was in Chicago for christmas last year and I was surprised to see all those drug ads on tv too. It was amazing! Practically every second ad was for some kind of drug.
Seeing American flags EVERYWHERE was also a strange. Well, strange for Australians, anyway.

lost is the best thing on tv right now, in my completely humble opinion. the drug commercials exist because the government decided it was legal for companies to show advertising so they do it on tv and in print and it's annoying as all hell.
