always make sure you know when your domain name expires and pay it up in advance of 2 years if you can.

waikiki-online.net expired in january and i never got a reminder email from my domain register company (they usually give you a 90 day, 60 day, 30 day and 15 day reminder) so i never thought to check up on it since i rely on that. now the domain points to some porn cartoon site. bittersweet as Regan put it, because i lost the domain but now i have an extra domain pointer on my account which frees up a space for a new site if i wanted
