goodbye, GeoCities

GEOCITIES used to be the place many people made their first website, but now it’s shutting up shop.

Yahoo announced it is closing GeoCities, a free service that hosts personal home pages, which it acquired 10 years ago during the dotcom boom.

The service, which became synonymous with early amateur websites and old-school animated images, is no longer accepting new customers and will be closing later this year.

even though I thought it was long dead too (LOL), it’ll be sad to see it go. i had my first website up at Geocities back around 1997 or so – it was the most exciting thing for me : picking out a neighbourhood, setting up my own place on the net, adding a billion animated GIF’s, making my text fluoro green …

ahhh the memories.

I used Geocities a couple of times, but I was mainly on Angelfire. It does bring back a lot of memories! 🙂

I started a Geocities site back in 1996. In fact, I’ve still got it hanging around. Gotta love the beautiful animated gifs with aliased backgrounds, and the web pre-CSS. 😉 Yahoo’s take over definitely killed it. RIP 🙁
