i still haven’t found what i’m looking for (i think)

over the past week, i’ve been pondering my ‘career’ – what i’m doing now, what i want to do in the future. i’ve read blogs and ebooks and started to scribble into journals ideas and great quotes to inspire me

in regards to work and hobbies, one of the questions asked is what lights my fire?
what makes me feel good when i’m doing it. what makes sense to me. what puts a smile on my face.

i’ve been thinking about that question for a few days now and at first i really couldn’t put my finger on what. i started off with silly things like being snuggled up on the couch and surfing the net – hardly career making things, or is it?

i told myself to not be so hard on myself – that maybe surfing the net while sitting on the couch COULD be a career if that’s what i want. if i dare to dream, no, if i just let go and have fun with that goal – maybe it’ll be a reality one day but it all starts with hard work and a fun positive attitude to live your life with passion and not be afraid.

so a note to myself – don’t be afraid, tracey.

and i’ll ask you – what lights your fire? what makes you feel good when you’re doing it, and could you make a career out of it?

Hi Tracey. I’ve been an avid reader of your blog. Really admire your family and your storytelling about your kids and husband.

Talking about “what lights my fire”, I’ve recently made a huge decision to stir away my career from Advertising to Pastry arts. I know that’s a bit crazy, taking all the responsibilities (including major paycuts, crazy working hours, and whatnots), but I thought if that could pay off for the passion inside of me, heck I’m just gonna do it (the money part will follow). 🙂 It took me quite some time to land on that decision, but do keep exploring 🙂 All the best to you.

Hi Tracy! I too am an avid reader of your blog, and have been for a few years now, but have never commented. But I felt compelled to comment on this post. You see, after studying for four years and working two years in a field that I thought I should be in but just didn’t fit, I quit my job, took a major pay cut, and went back to study postgrad on a scholarship.

Sure it meant I had to move into a share house, I haven’t been able to afford a wedding yet, and kids are still on the horizon AFTER I finish up here and get a job. But I am so glad I made these choices so that I could do what I truly enjoy.

I have seen so many of my friends getting stuck doing things they aren’t passionate about for a whole heap of reasons, and winding up miserable and in a rut, and I didn’t want to be like that.

Sometimes I still don’t know ‘what I want to do when I grow up’ – but I like the idea that it doesn’t have to be one thing for my lifetime.

Think about the things that you do that feed you, that nourish your mind and your soul, and follow that. Do something that will allow you to grow as a person so that, even if you are working crazy hours, you are left feeling like you have something to give back to your household and your family. And accept that what that is might change with the years.

Anyway good luck with your search and I hope you don’t feel like you have to have it all sorted right now! – Mimi
