in an instant

i had this crazy dream last night (which i attribute to the raging migraine and inevitable pain killer for it). the whole neighbourhood, maybe the whole city, was about to go up in flames and we had to rush out of our homes and head for the hills.

on our way out, we were able to grab a few things to take with us – and strangely enough, knowing that my kids were already safe, all i wanted was a photography book.

thinking about that dream again today, i wonder what i would really take with me if i knew my entire house was going to be destroyed in an instant but i had a few minutes to grab what i wanted… what would you take?

if you knew your loved ones were ok and that you would receive the basic stapes like water, food and shelter – what would be your list of things to save?

I once receive a phone call (not in a dream) and heard that there was a bush fire heading for our house. I went home. I really packed the car with one set of what I might keep. At first I packed the irreplaceable things, like photos. Then I packed things that would be very difficult to replace, like CD’s purchased overseas. We had decided to stop and defend the house. Which would have been fateful as the fire was coming to the open end of our dead-end street. In the end they stopped the fire a few km short of our house when there was a wind change. It was only after I wondered, what if the car burned, and the house didn’t?
