Wonder Weeks

Posted on July 30th, 2008 by Tracey

Wonder WeeksHooray, my copy of Wonder Weeks arrived the other day (thanks Amazon!)… Reading through the first half, I realised I should of bought this book alot earlier 😛 but nevertheless, the chapters for the 37 week stormy period was pretty much spot on and again I find myself nodding at how this book explains what is going on in my little coconut’s head.

I tend not to be a book person – my idea of a book is the tv guide or a photographic essay – and when it comes to raising a baby, I don’t like to consult a book – but this one, I like. It doesn’t TELL me what to do (or at least, I don’t read it that way), it just offers a perspective on development and reactions. we haven’t changed his routine as we don’t think the routine is the issue, we’re just going with it. (Jasper did sleep through over the weekend, btw! enough to restore my sleep bank a smidgen)

unpredictable joy

never did i think that the simple art of clapping would be this exciting but
JASPER CAN CLAP!
and it was the most exciting 5 seconds of my life, lately.

we’d been trying to teach him how to clap for a few weeks – we would clap after he would play something on the pianosaurus, and he would swing his head around and stare at us like we were on fire. then that graduated into a sly smile, and now he can clap on his own!

ah, parenthood. unpredictable joy.

post realisation

after reading a little bit about other parents’ experiences with sleep regression, i suddenly feel more awake and content

even waking up at 2.30 this morning to soothe J back to sleep has put a smile back on my face. knowing what i know now, and making the decision to just go with it and remember that it’s a developmental phase and it will pass, has given me back some sort of peace to my sleep deprived day.

i’m really excited that Jasper is now pulling up on his own, cruising the furniture, saying DIG DIG DIG DIG DIG over and over again. it’s a wonder of life 🙂 how can i be mad about that? i can’t.

i hope that one day a parent will stumble upon my ramblings about being so tired your face feels like it’s falling off, and it will help them too.

NOW, if i can only get rid of this awful cough, i’d be golden. maybe a trip to the dr is in order. i can’t be coughing for hours at night when i need to be sleeping…
