“Pay attention. Be astonished. Tell about it.”
Mary Oliver
i think it applies to blogging in general, but also is my new favourite quote – something to always remember when you have something you want to bring awareness to.
the amazing Kelle Hampton had posted about Down Syndrome Awareness Day on her blog a few months back – i’ve only just started to read back through her archives, but this is a woman i look up to. i don’t know where she gets her strength and the beauty in her words & photographs, but she is blessed, just as i know i am blessed.
i hope that in a year’s time, when we’ve lived with the diagnosis of Autism a bit longer and that we’ve had a year of therapies and baby steps forward and back, i’ll look back and see how far we’ve come also. not necessarily in terms of Jovie’s skills, but as a family and me as a mum and woman.
what i know now – Jovie is still Jovie, always has been and always will. she just also happens to have Autism. all kids are special in their own ways, and we are more alike than different. and each day is an opportunity for something awesome.

such a pretty dress for a pretty girl! we can’t stop taking photos of her in it

have a great weekend everyone!
good morning Jovie from Jasper & Jovie on Vimeo.
Jovie’s been a bit more chatty lately, so when she wandered into our room this morning I thought I’d turn on the video camera on my iPad and see what she thought…
you can see her eyes going back and forth between me and the iPad, we think she’s either trying to figure out what is going on or wants something.

firstly, thank you for all the emails, messages, tweets and calls over the past few days. i know it’s a bit odd – what do you say? but just reaching out to us has been enough to keep me going. support, they say, is something we’re going to need especially in these early stages.
this week so far as been filled with endless amounts of paperwork, much needed family time and the first seeds of ‘what do we do next?’. i am considering taking another month off from work (i’m supposed to be back in about 3 weeks time) to spend more time taking Jovie to more appointments and getting her into a schedule of therapy and support groups.. but i’ll have to get back to work eventually which makes me sad.
Jovie had a great time at Gymbaroo this morning, her best session yet! it’s been really great to spend that time with her and i can’t wait to get stuck into her OT (occupational therapy) sessions with her soon. (though we’re on waiting lists that are already 3 months long).
i like to keep busy, so even all of this is one crazy ride, i’m still thinking of ways that I can be a champion for Jovie and maybe do more with my life and not just sit on my butt and wallow in it.
