happy new year, my valentines

Posted on February 14th, 2010 by Tracey

it’s that special time of year when valentines day is upon us AND we get to celebrate chinese new year!

Regan and I don’t buy into the idea of the traditional valentines day (hello, $40 for a bunch of roses at WOOLWORTHS. the supermarket. ugh). we’ve spent the day at home with our babies and each other, watched a cute little movie called paper heart (which my sister lent to us because she thought it was basically Regan and I, lol) and caught up with a couple of episodes of breaking bad. ate some icecream and some pineapple tarts (as we always do each chinese new year).

wherever you are today, i hope it was a good day regardless of the title feb 14 is given, Jovie gives you her special smile 😉 x

love long distance

after 6 years of marriage, i often forget how hard it was to be away from Regan before we got married…

Regan is American and lived in the States when we met online. yep, online! it was a radiohead message board and there was something about him – even just knowing him online – that was different to anyone else that i have ever met. of course, i thought he was way out of my league, but lucky me – he felt the same way and we’ve been together ever since 🙂

there was a period of about 18 months (?) from when we first met in person & got engaged, to when he moved to Sydney and we were married. those 18 months were really rough – we had a tough migration process to go through (we ended up submitting 100’s of pages as part of the application) and Regan had to do things like police checks and medical exams (to check he was healthy and had no convictions etc). through that time, we were communicating with letters, phone calls, emails, packages … unbearable at times but with all of our savings going to the migration lawyer, there was no time/money for inbetween visits..

i think the worst part of the process was not knowing whether it would all work out in the end, how long it would take or whether the application would be rejected. but we had our eyes set on getting married and being together again (i think the date was pushed back at least once because of the migration process) and that was comforting to me. that eventually, yes we would be living our lives together, offline.

if you’re going through a long distance relationship (online or offline), i want to reassure you that if it’s meant to be, you will get through it but you need a goal because i think it would be tough to live that way for an undetermined amount of time. if the relationship is worth it, then plan your future, your life and don’t have any regrets. true love is hard to find, if you’ve got it, don’t ever let it get away.
