remembering Michael Jackson

Michael Jackson

on june 25th, 2009 – the world lost one of it’s brightest stars. Michael Joseph Jackson.

i’ve been trying to process what this means to me, and i don’t think i could ever really articulate it but i know this event, this man and his music are a part of me, just as it’s a part of millions of others around the world.

i grew up listening to Michael Jackson’s music and my childhood is scattered with memories that in someway include him.

driving home from swimming lessons every week, sitting in the back seat with a slurpee in hand – thriller playing on cassette and my sister crying her eyes out at ‘scary voice’ at the end. being insanely jealous that a bunch of family friends went to his concert in sydney. the blue thriller t shirt (WHICH I’VE BEEN SEARCHING FOR FOR OVER 20 YEARS NOW — WHERE IS IT??) that i coveted as a 3 year old. loving that he recorded a version of smile. moonwalker on beta tape and being utterly amazed at the choreography. trying my best to morph like the people at the end of black or white, after brushing my teeth each night. watching the super bowl (a rare thing for a young aussie who didn’t know much about american football) performance over and over again. watching the we are the world music video as a 4 year old. i seriously contemplated heading over to see his UK shows during my maternity leave, but thought we may get a chance to see him here in australia again.

most recently, while i was pregnant with Jovie i decided that i needed to school her and Jasper in some classic Michael Jackson. we spent alot of time in the car driving Regan around or going to and from grandma’s house – so i popped in the greatest hits and was able to introduce them the songs that my father had once introduced me to also, all those years ago.

for a man that had his own childhood taken away from him, i would like to thank him for providing the soundtrack for my life so far, especially my childhood. these memories are worth more than gold to me, and Michael Jackson will continue to live for as long as music exists.

fifteen facts

found via the ever lovely Chantelle, the latest challenge from blog this is to –

Tell us fifteen fascinating, far fetched, frightening, funny or frivolous facts about yourself. Those bits of trivia that are floating around in your life.

so here goes nothing ..

1. first and foremost, i really really love my family. like scary love. if anyone has doubts about getting married, staying married, having kids and having another – that you don’t know whether love can grow and that there would be enough for everyone – i’m telling you this – love knows no bounds.

2. i’m a visual person, not a word person. which is why you rarely get an amazingly well written blog entry from me.

3. i’m a tv addict, and sadly i think my kids are already displaying signs of following in my footsteps. oops. at the moment we’re catching up on 30 Rock and Dexter.

4. i’m so hard on myself, that i fear i will never get anything truly finished.

5. i have a major sweet tooth so i tend to bake alot. alot alot.

6. i love residential architecture. i wish i was smart enough to become an architect, instead i just love to sketch things out in my notepads and dream dream dream. today, while out on a walk with Jasper, i found myself walking past certain houses THREE TIMES just so i could drool at the exteriors and imagine what the interiors were like. i stopped short of pressing my face up against their windows. just.

7. i’m often mistaken to be much younger than i really am. i only dislike it when people look down on me for being ‘too young to have kids’.

8. i really looked forward to giving birth to both my kids and was fortunate enough to have great labours.

9. i take after my father – when i want something, i get it (and usually straight away). i get it myself though, don’t picture me cracking a whip or anything 😛

10. i don’t wear makeup. moisturiser & lip balm is good enough for me.

11. i do love taking photographs – at the moment they’re just of my home life (kids, food etc) but i hope to get back into doing other stuff later on. i love documenting my kids lives though, i’ll never get this time back so i don’t regret it at all.

12. i’m a homebody.

13. i don’t drink alcohol, i just don’t like it. same goes for drugs, the thought of both makes me feel gross inside.

14. the most famous person i’ve been in contact with is …. haha, not telling.

15. my favourite Michael Jackson song is The Way You Make Me Feel. (AIN’T NOBODY’S BUSINESS BUT MINE AND MY BABY’S, HEEE HEEE!!). i still shudder hearing about his passing, i’ve got to gather my words for a proper entry on how i feel.

on being glutened

back on gluten ..

so a couple of weeks ago i had a few allergy elimination sessions to try and get rid of my gluten intolerance… (note, i am NOT coeliac).

this cookie was my first taste of gluten (wheat) in about 4 years.

i’m cautious to say whether or not it has worked, hence why i haven’t blogged about it yet. but 2 weeks on, i’m slowly introducing small things, with wheat in it, into my diet and you know what.. i don’t feel as bad as i used too!

time will tell, i guess.

for the meantime, i’m going to take it easy – the aim of the elimination sessions was so i would be able to share a meal (or a bite of something) with my loved ones, without having to ask to see the ingredients label, then ultimately spending the night in the bathroom and suffering panic attacks for the rest of the month.

if i can do that, then i deem it successful 🙂
if it happens that i can’t do that, i can’t eat gluten for the rest of my life, well life will go on, won’t it? 😉 if i didn’t at least give this a go, i would regret it.
