what the shizz

aka, happy australia day tracey, now pee your pants.

so i was up on the roof, taking photos of the australia day fireworks in darling harbour (and also trying to spot darn comet mcnaught with no luck) when just as we thought the fireworks were over this red light appears in the distance.

the red light seems to grower bigger, and then starts to move towards us on the roof. it passes slowly over darling harbour and over the powerhouse museum, in the process revealing itself to be one of those fighter jets with a glowing firey tail.

as i try to steady myself from falling over the side of the building, trying not to scream and run – i actually DUCK as if the jet was going to land on the rooftop with us, because for all i know it was coming for me or it was going to fire a few rounds into the pool. (you know, like in the movies).

within the 10 seconds it takes for all of this to happen, i’m looking up under the jet in wonder – what the heck are they trying to do to us on australia day? scare the bejesus out of the us on the rooftop?

with my mouth ajar, i’m trying to take photos as evidence of how close this thing was to my head – but the camera doesn’t focus and all i get is something that looks like the sun in the night sky.

it disappeared into the atmosphere behind the city, and i was left there to figure out what was going on.

Regan calls me on my mobile, he was downstairs in our apartment when we thought he heard a bomb go off outside. i had to explain to him, without using too many cuss words, what had happened. he had only one question – why? i’m trying to figure that out, maybe there’s an explanation on the website for the exhibition. all i know is that if they had a camera on board, you would see a bunch of scared stunned asians on a rooftop with eyes wider than the horizon.

ahhh i need a stiff drink. and a new pair of pants.
i just wanted to see some fireworks, man. i guess i got a bonus round.

numbers like a song

Does anyone else do this?

Whenever I’m retrieving messages from my phone at work, 9 times out of 10 the person will say their phone number really quickly, like 99893243 rather than 99-89-32-43. (Random number by the way, don’t ring it on my behalf lol).

Instead of playing their message back, I try and give a pitch/tone to each number as they say it. Most times it’ll come out like a little song and I’ve got the number down correctly. Kinda like playing the song on a piano and each number is a different key.

I think there’s a term for this?

here’s something i’ll write about

since i had nothing else to report other than the heat and my groceries, i’ll address the Big Day Out ‘flag ban’ issue.

1. Big Day Out have not banned the Australian flag from the festival. They have requested that large flags are not brought in.

2. The media are a bunch of vultures.

3. People are too quick to believe in what is reported on tv and in the newspaper, even if the report contained misinformation. It really wasn’t hard for me to look up the BDO website to see what was officially requested. Why didn’t the Daily Telegraph do so also before they whipped everyone up into an Aussie pride parade? Don’t they have employed fact checkers?

4. I don’t know anyone who wakes up on the morning of any music festival and decides to take their flag.

it’s really strange for me to see so many people jump on the ‘it’s an OUTRAGE! you can’t tell me I can’t take pride in my country’ bus. nowhere has it been suggested that this was what the BDO organisers wanted. i love Australia as much as the next flag wearing sheila, but i’d suggest shutting up until you get your facts straight.

it’s incredibly frustrating to see people like Howard talk about this ‘ban’ as if he were talking about something else completely different. it’s like we’re not reading the same press release, or getting the same information.

as it stands currently, you are free to take a small flag if you wanted, you could wear aussie flag shorts or paint it on your face. they’re not legally stopping you.

so what’s the problem?
