on NOT being gluten free anymore

i’ve been thinking alot about it lately – how wonderful it would be to not be restricted to gluten free, yeast free food..

and it’s not the ability to just eat whatever i wanted (because i would cartwheel for a really decent cheeseburger right about now). what it comes down to, is the feeling of family and being a part of something. the more i think about it, the more i believe i am a pain in the ass, always asking whether things are gluten free or not going out to eat because it’s not gluten free. i’m tired of asking my friends, my family to check the ingredients.

don’t get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with a gluten free lifestyle. there are some really delicious gluten free, yeast free products out there – and of course i would stay gluten free my entire life if i had to, no problems. but i dream about the freedom of sitting around the table at yum cha, and eating. grabbing lunch ANYWHERE and not picking through the menu only to discover that water will be my meal. being able to eat christmas lunch with my family, and share what they’re having.

at this point, there’s no way i would just ‘try eating some bread and see what happens’. 1. i’m pregnant; and 2. i know what happens. i don’t believe i have coeliac disease, though i do need to be tested and that needs to happen ON gluten.

i think after the baby arrives and i’ve recovered my balance a bit, i’ll look into seeing someone about allergy elimination. i’m a bit wary of woo-woo doctors, but i am willing to at least give it a go … i guess i am after a definitive answer – am i gluten free for life?

anyone have any experiences with NAET? or have any advice/encouragement/suggestions?

Yes! I’ve done NAET with several different practitioners. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t work… I think this has to do with the skill of the practitioner. FOR ME, I’ve found that NAET can work when done in combination with acupuncture IF the practitioner is good (I’ve only had luck with one person — in New York; everyone else I’ve been to was total crap)!

What worked better for me was taking grapefruit seed extract (GSE) every day for several months and SUDDENLY I COULD EAT GLUTEN AGAIN! I don’t have coeliac disease, just a food sensitivity. Now you can’t do GSE when you’re pregnant, but I strongly recommend you try it in the future. I just started taking it again and I am feeling better already.

hey tracey. i’m a bit like you in that i don’t think i’m Coeliac, but i’m definitely something! i’ve never been officially tested or diagnosed, but i think i’m wheat intolerant (which is much, much easier to deal with than gluten intolerant so i feel lucky really!). i can get away with eating a bit of wheat, though it never makes me feel very good. it’s all a bit confusing sometimes, but basically i just try to avoid it most of the time (though i am pretty bad at turning down birthday cake, etc!).

i know what you mean about missing out on things and being a pain in the butt at people’s houses. it can be really hard.

I can’t imagine having to exclude things like that from my diet. I hope for your sake you can get back to eating what you want 🙂

Carrie, too bad i’m a little bit far from New York :P! i’m trying to get local recommendations for after this bub is born. can’t wait!

Lindsey, it is hard – but knowing what’s on the other side of my day if i eat it is harder!! 😛

Fiona, thanks 🙂
