Thankful Thursday: Parents

With risk of boring you to death with my reports on just how sick we are over here, we have been under the weather this week and it’s been terrible. 2 nights in a row, Jovie was waking every 2 hours which means I was up all night on my own trying to get her back to sleep. I calculated that I must of walked around our dining room table for at least 14 hours in those 48 hours (because walking in the pram was the only thing that stopped her from screaming). And I only managed about 3 hours sleep on top of that. (Don’t worry, I know this is what I signed up for ..).

Anyway, I ended up taking Jasper, Jo and myself to the doctor and yep, Jovie has a throat infection which is why she’s been so upset. Jasper will be fine. So with prescription in belly, Jo’s sleeping MUCH BETTER which means I don’t resemble a swamp monster anymore but I am still battling my own cold. So, in order to ‘get well soon’ I’ve relied on my mum and dad to help out a little bit more than usual, and as always they were there.

For Thankful Thursday today, I am so grateful for my parents. Without them, I wouldn’t of been able to sneak in a 3 hour nap yesterday that saved my sanity. There wouldn’t of been warm, comforting noodle soup and congee (the mother of all get well soon foods). And there wouldn’t of been someone to tell me to slow down.

Aren’t parents awesome?

Having a cough and a terribly runny nose isn’t what I call fun, but that’s what I’ve been up to this past week. Floating in an endless sea of tissues & hot lemon tea.

Jasper picked up something a couple of weeks ago and it drifted over to me, and now onto Jovie. Poor Jovie, she hasn’t coughed like that before so it scared her and she’s been really frowny these past few days. When she’s sad, she’s really sad. But when there’s a break in the storm and she’s smiling, it’s really really good.

It’s my joy in life to make Jovie smile. I’m so glad I get to try, every day.

November seems to be the month that flies by, before you know it Christmas will be here and then gone and 2012 will begin. The only good thing about time flying so fast is that time also brings possibilities and progress. I love looking forward, rather than back. Here’s to the summer!

a bump in the road

life is never easy, you have to earn your stripes.

yesterday in the mail, came a suspciously thin letter for me from Centrelink. it was a 1 page rejection letter to notify me that i don’t qualify to be Jovie’s carer. that i don’t provide the level of care required for the title.

it’s not the money that i’m only worried about, of course it would help out so much while i’m not working (and not being paid), but the slap in the face is that someone in an office somewhere judges whether you care for your Autistic child enough or not, and they have decided that i don’t do enough.

there are a few ways i can react to this – oh, there’s definate anger and confusion (the first rejection was because i work more than 25 hours a week but I don’t right now, and i corrected them but then they still reject the application? what. ). but i’m working on living a positive life and moving forward. i can’t be controlled by disagreements. i won’t be controlled by anger.

i will most probably ask them to review the application, again, but not after we start therapy (in less than 2 week now! yay!) and get a schedule going again.

but in the meantime, i still have dreams and passions that i want to pursue. i’m looking at changing careers and developing other side projects that i’ve had in my heart for a while. anything that keeps me in Jovie’s loop will do.

around the time of Jovie’s autism diagnosis in September, i read somewhere that now you have to be ready to fight for your child. i didn’t really know what that meant, but i’m slowly understanding. there’s going to be more rejections in the future, we will run out of funding and we might never take that family trip back to the States that we want to do in the next 2 years – but my goodness, i’ll fight it out for my children. whatever it takes to move our lives forward & upward.
